Lantern of Shared Wishes

ABOUT THIS WORK

This lantern design reflects the Chinese people's vision of a bright future. Interestingly, whether in the past or present, ordinary people throughout history have had the same longing for a better personal future, focusing not on grand narratives but on each individual's desire for personal happiness. This work incorporates many Chinese symbols, such as the 'crane' and the 'toad.' Each side of the lantern showcases the Chinese people's hope for improvements in different aspects of life. Regarding personal happiness, we hope to find two people who can 'grow old together,' represented here by the mandarin ducks, which the Chinese have always regarded as birds of love. Everyone wishes for a long life, expressed in the idiom 'live as long as pines and cranes.' Each side corresponds to a specific idiom.
